In an SAP S/4 HANA data implementation, implementing a data virtualization platform is a true data as a service environment.

During the Development phase, data discovery is required to move onto data deployment and migration, however, the data can be agile and does not need to move to data at rest architecture. This has multiple benefits for companies in terms of data management.

Data at rest becomes data that is accessible. Migration activities can be limited to initial data as needed or data access as needed. In terms of data management, the benefits are a reduction in the need to scale out your fixed data architecture environment.

Because data is virtualized, there is a limited need to develop and deploy database systems to address data capacity growth. The infrastructure needed during the deployment phase is reduced and the associated security is addressed at the data virtualization platform. Data is no longer at rest, so management of Personal Identifiable Information does not need to be governed.
